Mermaid Dolly Varden cake, Something Unique

This was definitely a fun cake to create, it all started from a grandfather looking for a cake for his grand daughter. Looking around our website he found the Dolly Varden cake we created before. As soon as he found it, knowing that she loves mermaids the decision easy.

Mermaid dressed ready to be placed in the cake, the cake had to be made taller to accommodate the legs — (All begins from this little doll!)

There are few types of dolls we can use to create a dolly varden cake.
1. Dolly Varden doll which only has top part. -> Little kid might be a bit disappointed when he/she finds out that they can not be keep it as a toy(?)
2. Generic doll and pull the legs off. -> Hmmm…. Little bit scary for our liking.
3, Generic doll and use it as is -> That is our way.

We use the entire doll. 🙂 Brand new doll is styled to suit cake theme, sanitised and foil wrapped before use in the cake.

Therefore, our Dolly Varden cakes are taller than our average cake. Our average cake height is 4″ (10cm) for a 3 layered cake without toppers or flower decoration. The Dolly Varden cake height is 6″ (15cm), the aim is to keep our doll’s legs all intact, ready to enjoy after the party 🙂

The tail was a challenge, lots of planning and engineering to make it as natural as possible.
It is piped in 3 different coloured buttercream to achieve realistic mermaid scale effect.

One more thing we were so thrilled about this creation was we finally achieved our “Blue” drip without any artificial food colouring. This certainly added an ocean feel to the cake and paired with toasted coconut sand, created the effect we were after.

Little sugar cookie fish, coral, and veggie & fruit coloured buttercream sea creatures added to create an “Under the sea” feel.

And last, a very challenging curved white chocolate “Big shell” topper was made. We always make sure all of our elements are attached securely so they won’t fall off during transport.

From the day when we first got this enquiry, we could feel the “love” of grandpa who wanted to impress his little granddaughter. This has to be done right. There are so many different elements added to this cake and it was not an easy cake to make, but seeing grandpa’s reaction on pick up…. makes it completely worth it. Happiness overload!
